ChatGPT Ads: a practical guide for small and mid-sized companies (2026)
By Tuomas Laitinen, Founder & CEO, Dashboa · Updated October 2026 · 12 min read
ChatGPT now shows ads next to its answers, including in Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands. This guide explains what ChatGPT Ads are, how they are chosen and priced, how they differ from Google Ads, and how to decide whether they make sense for your business.
In short
ChatGPT Ads are sponsored placements shown below ChatGPT’s answer, clearly labeled and separate from the answer itself.
They are shown to users on the Free and Go plans. Paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise) are ad-free.
Ads are matched to the topic of the conversation, not to exact keywords. You describe the topics with context hints.
Since 24 August 2026 ads have been shown in 31 European markets (EEA and Switzerland). Businesses there can buy through partners or OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager.
Ads never change ChatGPT’s answer. Being recommended in the answer itself is earned through content and reputation (GEO). Ads are a separate, paid channel next to it.
1. What ChatGPT Ads are
A ChatGPT ad is a short sponsored unit shown below ChatGPT’s response when the conversation is related to what you offer. It is labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the answer.
The basic format is simple: a headline, a sentence and an image, linking to your landing page. In OpenAI’s API, headlines are limited to 3–50 characters and the body text to about 100 characters, so every word counts.
OpenAI first announced ads in January 2026 and started testing them in the United States on 9 February 2026. It has published principles for the format, and its help pages state them plainly:
Ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers. Advertisers can’t change what ChatGPT says.
Advertisers don’t see conversations. They get aggregated performance data such as impressions and clicks.
No ads for users under 18, whether they say so or OpenAI predicts it.
No ads near sensitive or regulated topics, and no ads in Temporary Chats.
Users can manage ad settings, for example turn off personalization or hide ads.
2. Who sees ChatGPT Ads, and where
Ads appear for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don’t see ads.
The rollout has moved quickly:

ChatGPT’s audience is large: OpenAI said in February 2026 that it had 900 million weekly active users. Only Free and Go users see ads, so the reachable audience is smaller than that, but it is still one of the largest consumer apps in the world.
3. How ads are chosen
Ad selection starts from the topic of the current conversation. As an advertiser, you don’t buy exact keywords. Instead you give each ad group context hints: short descriptions of the conversations where your ad would be relevant.
OpenAI is clear that context hints are not exact-match keywords and don’t guarantee delivery in a specific conversation. The system also looks at your ad text, image and landing page to judge relevance. In practice, an ad that genuinely answers what the person is asking about has a better chance of being shown.
Other targeting options include country and region and device type (iOS, Android or web).
In Europe, targeting is mainly contextual. When ads launched in the EEA and Switzerland, custom audiences weren’t supported for campaigns targeting those markets, and ads weren’t personalized from past chats or memories. Check Ads Manager for the current options, as they keep changing.

New: formats, reporting and benchmarks still evolving
The biggest practical difference is intent. On Google, people type short queries. In ChatGPT, they often describe their situation: “I have a 30-year-old tin roof with moss, is it worth coating or should I replace it?” That gives a relevant ad a very specific moment to show up in, but it also means generic ad copy works poorly.
For most companies, ChatGPT Ads are an addition to Google Ads, not a replacement. Google still handles most search demand, and its tools are far more mature.
5. What it costs
ChatGPT Ads are sold in an auction. OpenAI describes it as a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, so a more relevant ad can win with a lower bid.
Bidding: you can pay per thousand impressions (CPM) or per click (CPC), and optimize toward impressions, clicks or conversions.
Price level: when the US pilot launched, the reported price was around $60 CPM. Prices vary by market and topic, and there is not yet a reliable public benchmark for Finland, Sweden or the Netherlands.
Minimum spend: OpenAI has used daily minimums that vary by currency. Check the current minimum in Ads Manager when you set up.
The ad budget is separate from any management fee: you pay OpenAI directly for the media.
Because the channel is new, plan a test budget you’re comfortable with, run it long enough to collect real data, and judge it on leads and sales, not on impressions.
6. What you need before you start
A clear offer. What exactly do you sell, to whom, where, and at what price or price range? ChatGPT users ask specific questions, and vague offers lose.
Context hints written from real customer questions. Collect the questions customers ask in calls, emails and chats. Each ad group should cover one type of need.
Ad copy that answers the question. You have about 50 characters for the headline and 100 for the sentence. Lead with the answer or the benefit, not your company name.
An image that makes sense small and without text.
A landing page that continues the conversation. It should answer the same question in the first lines, show the price or price range if you can, and make the next step obvious (quote, booking, purchase).
Tracking. Install the OpenAI Pixel or set up the Conversions API so you can see which ads lead to quote requests or sales, not just clicks.
Exclusions. Decide what you don’t want to appear next to, and keep your categories within OpenAI’s ad policies.
7. Who should use ChatGPT Ads (and who shouldn’t yet)
Good candidates:
Services people research before buying: home services, renovation, B2B services, software, education and training.
Products that need advice: where buyers ask “which one should I choose” or “is this worth it”.
Companies already running Google Ads with a working landing page and tracking, so results can be compared fairly.
Local and niche businesses whose customers describe very specific needs.
Wait or be careful if:
Your category is sensitive or regulated (for example some health or financial topics). Ads may not be eligible near those conversations at all.
You have no tracking and no clear landing page yet. Fix those first, or you won’t learn anything from the test.
Your budget is very small. Google Ads search usually remains the more predictable first channel.
8. Example: a local plumber testing ChatGPT Ads
An illustrative example. The company is made up.
Nordic Pipe Care is a plumbing company in Tampere that already runs Google Ads. The owner wants to test ChatGPT Ads for urgent jobs and renovations.
Ad group 1: urgent leaks
Context hints: “water leaking under the kitchen sink”, “emergency plumber same day in Tampere”, “burst pipe what to do”.
Headline: “Same-day plumber in Tampere”
Sentence: “Leaks and blocked drains fixed today. Clear prices before we start.”
Landing page: an emergency service page with phone number, service area and price range at the top.
Ad group 2: bathroom renovation
Context hints: “how much does a bathroom renovation cost”, “replacing old pipes in an apartment”, “pipe renovation in a housing company”.
Headline: “Bathroom and pipe renovations”
Sentence: “Free quote within two days. Household tax credit explained.”
Landing page: a renovation page with typical price ranges and a quote form.
Measuring: both ad groups send leads to the same quote form, tracked with the OpenAI Pixel. After a few weeks the owner compares cost per lead with Google Ads and keeps the ad group that performs, then writes new versions of the ad text for it.
9. How to measure results
Impressions and click-through rate (CTR): tell you whether your context hints and ad copy match the conversations.
Cost per click and cost per lead: compare with Google Ads on the same landing page.
Conversions: quote requests, calls, bookings or sales, tracked with the Pixel or Conversions API.
Lead quality: ask your sales team whether ChatGPT leads are as good as other leads. In a new channel, quality matters more than volume.
Test two versions of the ad in each ad group and let the data decide. Change one thing at a time, so you know what made the difference.
10. ChatGPT Ads and GEO
ChatGPT has two ways to put your company in front of a buyer:

They work best together. Ads give you visibility while organic presence builds, and the questions people ask in your ad campaigns show which topics your content should answer. You can’t buy a recommendation inside the answer, so GEO remains the long-term foundation. Read more in our GEO guide.
11. Common mistakes
Using Google Ads keywords as context hints. Short keyword lists don’t describe conversations. Write hints the way people actually ask.
Generic ad copy. “Quality services since 1998” doesn’t answer anyone’s question. Answer the need in the headline.
Sending traffic to the front page. Use a page that answers the same question the ad does.
No tracking. Without the Pixel or Conversions API you only see clicks, and you can’t tell whether the channel pays off.
Judging too early. A new channel needs enough impressions and clicks before conclusions. Decide in advance how long the test runs and what result counts as success.
Expecting ads to improve organic answers. They don’t. OpenAI states that ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers.
12. How Dashboa helps
Dashboa runs ChatGPT Ads as an add-on to SEO & GEO or Google Ads:
Campaign setup with context hints written from your customers’ real questions.
Two ad versions tested in each ad group, with the better one kept.
Weekly report with impressions, clicks and leads, next to your Google Ads results.
ChatGPT Ads add-on +€2,028 / year with either plan. The ad budget is paid separately.
13. Frequently asked questions
Are ChatGPT Ads available in Finland? Yes. Ads have been shown in 31 European markets, including Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands, since 24 August 2026, and advertisers there can buy through partners or OpenAI’s Ads Manager.
Do ChatGPT Ads affect what ChatGPT recommends? No. OpenAI states that ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers. Ads are shown separately below the answer and labeled as sponsored.
Who sees the ads? Logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users don’t see ads, and there are no ads for users under 18 or in Temporary Chats.
What does advertising on ChatGPT cost? You set the budget and bid in an auction, paying per impression or per click. Prices vary by market and topic, and there are daily minimums that depend on currency. The media budget is paid directly to OpenAI.
Can I target by keywords? Not exact keywords. You describe relevant conversations with context hints, and the system also uses your ad text and landing page to judge relevance.
Can I use my customer lists or retargeting in Europe? At launch in Europe, custom audiences weren’t supported for campaigns targeting the EEA or Switzerland, and ads weren’t personalized from past chats. Check Ads Manager for current options.
Should I choose ChatGPT Ads or Google Ads? For most businesses, start with or keep Google Ads and test ChatGPT Ads alongside it. Compare cost per lead on the same landing page.
Do I still need GEO if I run ChatGPT Ads? Yes. Ads only appear below the answer for Free and Go users. Being mentioned in the answer itself, for every user, comes from GEO.
